THE ARCHIPELAGO BRIJUNI
www.np-brijuni.hr |
The archipelago of Brijuni is an extraordinary blend of
natural, historical and cultural heritage. The mild climate
and the favourable geographical conditions, deep retracted
bays and easily defendable elevated fortifications, have secured
a continuum in the human activity on the island from a pre-historic
age until the present day. On a relatively small archipelago,
of an area of around 7km2, have been registered some hundred
sites and buildings of archaeological and cultural-historical
value and which comprise the period from the first Neolithic
settlements, the dugouts in the bay of Soline, until the creation
of an elite summer and health resort at the beginning of the
last century and the presidential residency visited by statesmen
from one third of the worlds countries in its 25 years of
existence (1954-1979).
This concise curriculum vitae of the island, which carefully
preserves the traces of 5000 years of human history, makes
the legend of its creation even more real and when arriving
to the island a part of Heaven discloses in front of our eyes
in the unique harmony of the islands flora, fauna and heritage.
A unique bland of the green islands sank into the turquoise-blue
sea whose bays and hills are laced with the white Istrian
rocks.
For ages the beauties of the gentle landscape of Brijuni
have attracted the curious that have left the marks of their
presence, therefore today on the island we have over a hundred
acres of archaeological sites.

CITY OF PULA

The legend of the Argonauts describes the pursuit of the Colchians
after the ship Argo and the Golden Fleece. The subjects of
the king of Colchis gave up further pursuit after the death
of their king's son. Fearing that they would be punished for
the prince's death and the failure of the pursuit if they
returned to Colchis, they decided to settle where the prince
died. Pula therefore became not only a harbour to the Colchian
fugitives, but also their exile. The most famous geographer
of the antiquity - Strabo - claims that Pula was founded in
this way and according to this legend, it occurred around
three thousand years ago.
In the Illyrian period, until the arrival of the Roman legions,
Pula was just a suburb of the nearby Nesactium. Pula took
over the leading position by means of an intensive colonization
and good commercial routes and owing to the importance of
its military position.
Numerous trades develop in that period: the stone cutting
for the many buildings in Pula and surroundings, agriculture,
viticulture, olive-growing, fishing and pottery for the transport
of oil, wine, wheat and fish.
Owing to its geographical isolation Pula avoided the migrations,
plundering and invasions of the barbarians until the 5th century
when it was conquered by the Ostrogoths and Visigoths. Under
the Eastern Roman Empire the town prospered and was given
military importance in the conflicts between the Byzantine
army and the Goths...
